Woman dies of dengue in Mumbai;122 cases reported this monsoon

A woman has succumbed to dengue in the city this monsoon even as 122 cases of the vector disease have been reported here during this rainy season, officials said.

Besides, over 1,500 people have been admitted to various hospitals in the city for suspected dengue this month alone, according to figures of the Mumbai civic body.
"A woman, who came from outside and was staying in Vikhroli, was infected by dengue and she lost her life in the civic hospital on September 8," an official said today.

"The death of a suburban Borivali resident has also been reported at a private hospital on September 13 this month, that we need to cross-check and confirm whether it is due to dengue only," she said.

The civic administration has taken cognisance of Dengue and the insecticide department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was doing every bit to prevent it, the official further said.

BMC's executive health officer Dr Padmaja Keskar appealed to the citizens to identify and destroy the mosquito-breeding spots to prevent the disease.

"We appeal to the people of the city and request them to exercise utmost caution and destroy mosquito breeding spots in and around their houses or housing societies," she said.

Meanwhile, around 4-6 cops from suburban Jogeshwari police station are also reported to be suffering from dengue, a policeman said.

When asked about the policemen's dengue case, Keskar said, "We too have got the same report. Our team visited and found breeding spots for the Aedes mosquito, which is the carrier of the dengue virus."

"But the policemen are down with dengue can be said only after proper test is conducted on them," she said.

Currently, 122 cases of dengue have been reported and patients are being treated in various government and private hospitals across the city, she said.

According the civic statistics, over 1,500 people have been admitted to various hospitals in the city due to suspected dengue since the beginning of this month.

With city and other parts of the state receiving intermittent rainfall over the past few months, there has been a rise in mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria.

Mosquito-breeding proliferations are most common during the months of August and September due to many spots of stagnant rain water.

Warning about weight loss products on the web by TGA

Home

30 August 2016
Australia's medicines regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has warned of the dangers of buying weight loss medicines online, particularly from unknown overseas websites.
The TGA's Principal Medical Adviser, A/Professor Tim Greenaway, said today the TGA had received many reports about overseas based websites offering 'herbal' or 'drug free' weight loss products.
"Far from being 'natural', many of these products contain ingredients which may be harmful and are not disclosed on the product label," Professor Greenaway said.
"In Australia, many weight loss products are considered medicines. Because of this they are regulated by the TGA and have to meet quality and safety standards but we have no control over medicines and supplements purchased from overseas by consumers on the web."
"Not only have many of these products not been evaluated for safety by the TGA, some are not approved for supply in Australia."
Dr Greenaway said it is most concerning that analysis of seized products by the TGA Laboratories has found products that contain contaminants such as undisclosed pharmaceutical substances, including:
  • Sibutramine - a prescription-only substance in Australia. Sibutramine was withdrawn from world markets in 2010 due to increased risk of cardiac events (like heart attack) and stroke.
  • Phenolphthalein - was withdrawn from sale on many markets in the late 1990's due to concerns over increased risk of cancer with long term use.
"Both Sibutramine and Phenolphthalein can cause dangerous interactions with other medications which could have serious consequences for your health," Professor Greenaway said.
"We strongly urge Australians to use extreme caution when considering buying weight loss medicines online from unknown websites."
"People should also be suspicious of wild claims. If a website or product seems too good to be true, it probably is. Make sure you're buying from a legitimate Australian pharmacy."
Professor Greenaway said if anyone is concerned about products they may have taken they should consult their pharmacist or GP.

E-cigarettes: a developing public health consensus Joint statement on e-cigarettes by Public Health England and other UK public health organisations by gmpviolations.com

E-cigarettes: a developing public health consensus Joint statement on e-cigarettes by Public Health England and other UK public health organisations Since 2000, smoking among adults in England has fallen by one third and among children by two thirds. Yet almost one in five adults continue to smoke, with higher rates in the more deprived communities meaning that they bear the majority of the harm caused. There is a strong public health consensus on tobacco control, embodied in the landmark report Smoking Still Kills. We all agree that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than smoking. One in two lifelong smokers dies from their addiction. All the evidence suggests that the health risks posed by e-cigarettes are relatively small by comparison but we must continue to study the long-term effects. And yet, millions of smokers have the impression that e-cigarettes are at least as harmful as tobacco. Over 1.3 million UK e-cigarette users have completely stopped smoking and almost 1.4 million others continue to smoke. We have a responsibility to provide clear information on the evidence we have, to encourage complete smoking cessation and help prevent relapse to smoking.
